American Lawn Mower Company manufactures Earthwise lawn mowers. Robert Butler Kersey founded the family-owned business in 1895 with a focus on a cleaner, greener option for the American lawn. Michael Kersey, his great-grandson, is the president of American Lawn Mower Co.
The company is famous for its reel lawn mowers and mowed the basin lawns at the Chicago’s World’s Fairgrounds in the 1890s. Today, its product brands are sold at large retailers to the small country hardware store. Earthwise Tools, Great States brands, Scotts brands, and Zombie Power tools are the brands manufactured under the American Lawn Mower Co. umbrella.
In 1936 the company acquired one of its competitors, the Great States Corporation. Until the 80’s they operated as separate companies. When the plant in Muncie closed, the two companies consolidated in Shelbyville.
The post-war boom with almost 60 lawn mower manufacturers tapered down to about two as industrialization took over. Many companies closed their doors. The American Great States company owned an ironworks which that saved them. They could produce lawn mower parts at low costs.
The Earthwise brand continues the company’s commitment to “the clean air choice” by providing corded and cordless electric lawn mowers for more extensive lawns. In 2011 the lithium tools line was launched focusing on environmental friendly tools
